MEGHALAYA STUDENTS MUST PASS ALL SIX SUBJECTS

The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) has announced that from the 2026–27 academic year, students must pass all six subjects to qualify in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination.

This change will not affect students appearing for the SSLC exams in the 2024–25 and 2025–26 academic years. It will also not apply to students who need to reappear for failed subjects in 2026–27 or later.

The Board issued this notification in accordance with a letter from the Meghalaya Education Department (No. EDN.122/2024/12, dated 28 August 2024, Shillong), following Cabinet approval granted on 9 August 2024 for various examination reforms to be implemented from the 2024–25 academic year onward.

According to the notification, the SSLC examination will be conducted twice in the same academic year. Starting from 2025, the First Main Examination will be held every year in February, followed by a Second Supplementary Examination in April/May.

For the First Main Examination, there will be two categories: New Course and Old Course.

Under the New Course:

  • Regular-I candidates are students from affiliated schools.

  • Regular-II candidates are students from unaffiliated schools.

Under the Old Course:

  • Non-regular candidates include students who failed the SSLC examination in 2024 or earlier.

  • Compartmental candidates are those who failed one or more subjects in the SSLC examination in 2024 or earlier.

  • Private candidates are those who failed the Selection Test before SSLC 2024 but later passed the Selection Test conducted by their respective DSEO offices.

Improvement examinations will be available only for candidates who passed the SSLC examination in 2024.

For the Second Supplementary Examination, students who fail any subject in the Main Examination can automatically reappear, with no limit on the number of subjects they can retake.

Students who pass the First Main Examination and want to improve their marks in one, two, or all subjects may also appear in the Second Examination as Improvement Candidates. However, this option is not available to those who already appeared for improvement in the Main Examination.

The maximum number of consecutive attempts allowed is four, including the first Main Examination attempt. After that, students must re-enroll in a school as regular students and appear again as fresh candidates.

Regarding the revised schedule from the 2025–26 academic year onward, the SSLC Main Examination will be conducted in the first week of December each year starting from 2025, and the Supplementary Examination will be conducted in March each year starting from 2026.
